This week AirTran Airways (AAI) announced they would take control of 5 slots at LaGuardia and 1 slot at Washington National from ATA in a long term lease agreement. AirTran will begin service later this quarter but will ramp up services in early 2008 when a majority of the slots become available.
AirTran initial plans to offer services from
New York to leisure destinations in
Florida but in spring of 2008 will start services to the Southeastern and Midwestern markets.
This will help expand AirTran’s east-west traffic and possibly might help develop a Midwestern focus city in
Milwaukee.
The airline also said that it would trim estimated growth slightly but is still expected to maintain double digit growth this next year. They said they would also push back deliveries of a few Boeing 737’s until 2011, but still will bring online ten additional aircraft this upcoming year.
