After being slammed with a $61 million dollar fine for price fixing by the Department of Justice, Qantas is facing a class action suit with up to 1000 Australian companies that could total $200 million AU. Lawyers are pursuing a class action suit against the national carrier of Australia from sectors as diverse as entertainment and farming. Qantas was accused of conspiring with other airlines and the freight industry generally, to fix and impose fuel surcharges in the air-cargo market between 2000 and last year. Qantas Airways knew that it would be fined by the U.S. Department of Justice and set aside $40 million in last year’s financial statements. Still Qantas’ fine is significantly less severe than that handed down by the DOJ to Korean Air and British Airways of $300 million each. Qantas received a "co-operation discount" from the DOJ.
