Earlier this week, US Airways (LCC) announced they would cut 40 percent of their flight schedules from Pittsburgh, PA citing losses the airline has taken at the airport in recent years. The airline plans to cut 450 jobs by January in Pittsburgh, along with closing the Pittsburgh flight crew base, leaving 500 employees to bid for other cities.
US Airways plans to cut daily departures from Pittsburgh from 108 to only 68 daily departures.
"Unfortunately our ability to operate profitably from Pittsburgh has been sharply eroded over the past few years and the hub lost more than $40 million over the past 12 months alone," Doug Parker, chairman and CEO of US Airways Group Inc.
The introduction of low cost carriers into Pittsburgh and the close proximity to Philadelphia has led to the reduction in flight schedules by US Airways. But officials in Pittsburgh are confident that other carriers will fill in the gaps left by US Airways.
