After announcing that they would stop services from Columbus to Bellingham, WA, and San Deigo, CA, Skybus will begin expanding into other cities. Skybus has announced that they will begin a focus city in Greensboro, NC.
The state of North Carolina, the city of Greensboro, and the local airport, Piedmont Triad International Airport, all rolled out the welcome mat to Skybus Airlines. The state pledged up to $3.98 million in exchange for Skybus' promise to add 375 jobs in Greensboro. The airport is offering $6 million in incentives. And other development groups in the area are offering other incentives.
Skybus will offer non-stop services from Greensboro to Portsmouth, NH, Punta Gorda, FL, Fort Lauderdale, Chicopee, MA, St. Augustine, FL, Burbank, CA, and Gulfport-Biloxi, MS and their hub airport in Columbus, OH.
Apparently Greensboro has been good to Skybus. Skybus Chief Executive Bill Diffenderffer has called the Greensboro route Skybus' most profitable from Columbus, and said it has far exceeded expectations.
Greensboro is a college area with a metro population of 1.8 million people and over 6 million are within a hundred miles, including near by cities of Raleigh and Charlotte.
The flights start in early to mid January.
WooHoo!, more cheap-ish flights to cities that I have to drive up to an hour or more to visit. It will be interesting to see if US Airways or Delta Air Lines ramp up services to Greensboro, NC.
