JetBlue Airways (JBLU) may be adding services to the Canadian market fairly soon. The airline has been applying for charter services and schedule services. JetBlue spokesman Sebastian White confirmed JetBlue has its eye on Canada, starting with private charter flights next spring. Because the regulatory process for international schedule service takes some time, scheduled flights would not begin right away.
"There's no real meaningful low-fare competition on transborder routes," Mr. White said.
Currently there are only a hand full of schedule flights between the US and Canada on low cost carriers, Frontier and WestJet. JetBlue Airways could provide a gateway for many Canadian travelers looking for connections throughout the US via their New York hub.
WestJet and Porter Airlines both are expanding their international destinations to the US later this year and next.
"Canada is on our radar, but the key is finding competitive airport fees and the costs have to come down," JetBlue's Mr. White cautioned. Toronto’s Pearson International Airport has the world’s highest landing fees which could deter JetBlue from Toronto but could mean service to other Canadian cities.
