Northwest Airlines CEO Douglas Steenland said that if airlines cut schedules and services from congested cities that fairs might increase in those cities. Steenland is worried that cutting services might upset passengers too.
However Steenland also said that not doing anything would compound an already congested air traffic control system.
Steenland’s remarks come on the heels of former FAA Administrator Blakey’s comments surrounding the ever increasing delay and congestion issue.
The northeast part of the nation seems to be the area most under the microscope for congestion. This year alone 3 out of every 10 flights were late by more than 15 minutes, a record for the first 7 months of this year.
Something has got to be done. The lost productivity, the wasted fuel, and the delays are costing this nation billions each year. There is some hope on the horizon as newer ATC equipment and routing procedures help lessen congestion but unrealistic schedules by the airlines do not help the situation either.
