Today CNN Money and Fortune Magazine released their 100 fastest growing companies. Despite the recovery the airlines are in now, no airline made the list. The industry that laid off thousands years ago is just now starting to rehire a small percentage of those who were handed pink slips.
Many airlines are now hiring. Northwest Airlines said a few weeks ago that they would add several hundred pilots to their payroll list after scheduling issues left that company cancelling hundreds of flights.
But many of the companies on the top 100 fastest growing list were energy and financial companies. They include Grey Wolf and Frontier Oil which both expect an EPS growth rate of between 250 and 300 percent.
A big winner is Allegheny Technologies. The company is expecting EPS near 250% on a big increase in orders for Boeing's 787. Allegheny Technologies produces titanium.
It will be interesting to see the relationship between the expected growth rate in air traffic (5.1% FAA estimate) and the hiring rate of the airline industry.
