The airline that started 36 years ago moving passengers between Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio is expected to surpass AMR Corps (AMR), American Airlines, as the world’s largest airline in terms of passenger traffic. 

Southwest Airlines (LUV) has already surpassed American Airlines in the first 5 months of the year.  The domestic only carrier transported 40.3 million passengers between January and May, an increase of over 4 percent from last year. 

Last year Southwest Airlines carried nearly 100 million passengers, just a few million shy of eclipsing Fort-Worth based American Airlines. 

If the numbers continue to come in strong for Southwest Airlines it will be the first time in 5 years that American Airlines will not be the top airline in the world in passenger traffic.
