It looks like US Airways Group Inc., (LCC) the parent company of US Airways is taking the cash they would have spent acquring Delta Air Lines and buying new jets with it. US Airways is looking to purchase 60 new single aisle jets for their fleet. US Airways suspended talks with aircraft manufacturers in November to pursue a hostile bid for Delta Air Lines and resumed talks after dropping the offer in Jan.
The airline is currently looking into Boeing's 737NG and Airbus' A320s to replace 55 of their oldest Boeing 737-300s. The deal could be worth an estimated $5 billion dollars. The airline hopes to have the planes entering into service between 2008 and 2010.
For longer-range aircraft, US Airways will choose between Boeing's 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus A350, Kerr said. The airline ordered 20 A350s, valued at $3.2 billion, in November 2005 in exchange for a $250 million loan that helped finance the merger of US Airways and America West.
"The A350 today is not the plane we ordered," Kerr said, referring to delays and redesigns since 2005. "We need to know what the plane is going to cost and when it will be ready."
US Airways has the right to cancel their A350 order due to the length of delays the program has encountered.
I believe US Airways will continue to transform themselves into an all Airbus fleet. I believe they will probably pick Airbus aircraft, at least single aisle aircraft, over the Boeing product.
