
Philadelphia to Shanghai, China non-stop. That's what US Airways Group Inc. (LCC) the parent company of US Airways, wants to do when CEO Doug Parker announced their plans to start service if approved by the US Department of Transportation. If US Airways would get their first flight to Asia, they would want to add more. Parker wants to even add Tokyo, despite the difficult nature of securing gates. I'm sure a Star Alliance partnership will help them with that.
Five other U.S. carriers - American, Continental, Delta, Northwest and Hawaiian - also are expected to apply for the right to fly between China and one of their U.S. hub airports.
US Airways came out strong for a flight to China, just days after Delta rejected a takeover bid and said they wanted to fly from Atlanta to China.
US Airways has been talking to Ace Aviation Holdings Ltd., the parent of Air Canada, about buying or leasing Airbus A340 jets that Air Canada expects to begin replacing this year, Bloomberg News reported. The four-engine A340 has a range of more than 8,000 miles.
