US Airways Wants China Flights Yet They Lack Capable Aircraft

After US Airways pulled their nearly $10 billion bid for Delta Air Lines last week and their CEO was arrested on DUI charges, the next logical series of skirmishes would include bidding against your former take over target for a route to China in 2008.

US Airways Group Inc., (LCC) the parent company of US Airways is sticking it to Atlanta based Delta Air Lines after they successfully fought off a hostile takeover bid that started nearly 3 months ago.  The only problem is that Tempe based US Airways does not know where they will fly from or to, and better yet, have no plane that could fly the distance to China.

US Airways spokesman Phil Gee said the airline would likely acquire a widebody plane such as a Boeing 777 or Airbus A340.

I am going to have to say that US Airways will be probably acquiring an Airbus A340.  US Airways has started to trend towards an Airbus based fleet with 80+ Airbus aircraft on order now.  As for destinations, their Philadelphia and Phoenix hubs look to be the best options for them.

US Airways is expected to file a petition with the U.S. Department of Transportation for the rights to fly to China in the near future.  Delta Air Lines said it wants to fly non-stop from their Atlanta hub to China starting next year.

This will probably not be the last time these two airlines will fight over something.  With US Airways being the top major airline to make money last year and coming out extremely strong after their merger with America West and Delta Air Lines coming out of bankruptcy protection later this year, it will be a battle royale between the two airlines as they fight to gain passengers, destinations, and look to crush the competition.
