San Francisco International Airport is getting more crowded as two new airlines announced recent new service to the city, even while another airline sits idle waiting approval from the Department of Transportation.
Southwest Airlines said they would return to San Francisco International Airport after pulling out in March of 2001 citing high costs for the airline. "San Francisco International is the only major Bay Area airport we don't currently serve, having made a very difficult decision in 2001 to cease service there after nearly 20 years. Today, SFO has improved operationally and is a more cost-efficient airport, and Southwest is a far larger airline than it was in 2001 and better able to support this type of operation," said Gary Kelly, Southwest's Vice Chairman and CEO.
Just a month ago, Jetblue Airways said they would begin flights from Boston and New York City to San Francisco. "San Franciscans have been loyal to JetBlue since 2000 when we first launched service to Oakland International Airport," said David Neeleman, Founder and CEO of JetBlue.
It is looking like a crowded market between San Francisco and New York. Both Southwest and Jetblue are showing Virgin America, if they want to play with the big boys they better be ready to play hard.
It should be fun to watch. I just love when the airlines are flighting amongst themselves!
