More bad news for AMR Corporation's (AMR) American Airlines as they continue to deal with their pilots union; they will also be under federal review for their incident that left passengers sitting on a jet plane for 7+ hours.
Inspector General Calvin Scovel said the review, requested by Transportation Secretary Mary Peters, will be thorough and objective so action can be taken to "prevent such situations from happening again."
Peters said in a statement that she had "serious concerns" about contingency plans at airlines that permit passengers to sit on planes for long periods of time while they wait for takeoff or arrival at a gate.
American Airlines said they would cooperate with the government review.
Most carriers said they were reviewing their customer service policies in an effort to head off government regulation. Passengers have been in a rage after jetBlue left passengers on planes for hours on Valentine's Day. However, jetBlue's customer service response has been fairly proactive, even enacting their own set of bill of rights for passengers.
