The new US Airways, just out of merging with America West, posted a 4th quarter profit and a full year profit that beat all the other major carriers in the nation. For the quarter US Airways posted a $12 million dollar profit, but excluding special expenses, the airline would have made $86 million. For the full year 2006, US Airways reported a net profit of $507 million, beating out all the rest of the major carriers.
"We are extremely pleased," US Airways CEO Doug Parker said in a conference call with analysts, noting that 2006 was the first full year of combined operating and financial results from America West Airlines and the former US Airways.
I realize that US Airways is making some money now that both companies have combined forces but how can they offer billions of dollars both in stock and cash for Delta Air Lines? And if the rumors are true, they are going to be offering a billion more for the company.
Parker said he would hold Delta creditors to a Thursday deadline on US Airway's $9.9 billion offer for the Atlanta-based carrier.
So now what does Parker have up his sleeve if he has set a deadline for the carrier to accept his offer or reject it. Is he eyeing another carrier? Maybe a little too much merger mania has gone to his head or the guy is more in tune with the industry and most people.
