Northwest Airlines has signed a deal to sell seven of their aging DC-10 aircraft to ATA Airlines. However the details of the deal are not being public as northwest is looking to sell more aircraft and doesn't want the bidders to have the upper hand. ATA's undisclosed offer was the best of several for the DC-10s aircraft, which would have been too costly for Northwest to keep.
Northwest stopped using their DC-10's on the trans-Atlantic routes last month but still operates services from their Minneapolis/St. Paul hub to Hawaii with the lumbering aging giants.
Northwest has been selling off pieces of their fleet. The airline sold six planes to Omni Air International in July and two airframes to Charlotte Aircraft Corp. before it filed for bankruptcy last year. This process of selling off aircraft is part of NWA's slimming down the airline and also providing the airline with better products for the company. The airline has been investing in newer aircraft in recent years with the A330 on some of their longer international routes, their promise to buy Boeing's new Dreamliner, the B787, and their continued effort to reduce their DC-9 fleet.
ATA Airlines current does not have any DC-10 aircraft in their fleet.
