Your Favorite Airplane?
I recently returned from a segment run and had the unlucky joy of flying on two of the most undesirable aircraft out there.  Since I fly out of a medium sized city and I am flying into an airport that is not a hub for my chosen airline the aircraft tend to be smaller.

I had the unfortunte luck of having to fly on regional service both to and from my destination.  Flying commuter is not my most favorite thing to do, and with carriers using more and more regional services/ commuter services it looks like I'll have to stick with the smaller planes for now.

CRJ200 UAX 2.jpgThe first and last leg included a nice 1.5 hour trip on the CanadAir Regional Jet 200 series.  It really is not a comfortable plane.  The overheads are small, the seats are crammed in there however if you sit on the window rows, you can prop up your leg on the little edge, pile up a couple of pillows and all while leaning forward take a decent nap.

My second leg and third leg were on the lesser desirable ERJ 145.  This plane is a small, longer, less comfortable aircraft.  The 1 by 2 configuration is something of an oddity.  There is no ledge to prop ones foot up, and the CG of the airplane seemed to be odd, in that a majority of our plane passengers were shuffled to the rear behind row 5 in order to meet that CG requirement.

So now that you know about my hated planes how about you?  What are some of your planes that when you see them at the gate you just cringe?  What are you most favorite planes?  What's the most comfortable ride you have taken?

My heart sinks when I step on the 757, no matter what carrier, they are wretched in economy. NW's 57s are the worst - a real sardine can.

Surprisingly, I had two really great rides on US's 321s recently. Much more leg room in coach, leant up against the window and read for 5 hours.

...pulled the trigger on my comment too early...

Despite having many years of NRSA travel on United, and getting spoiled in biz and first, I find economy quite pleasant provided I have a window, a good book, and a decent cup of coffee or tea.

...Guessing that might just be me though.

I don't mind economy but prefer it be on at least the mainline fleet; those crj's and erj's are too small for me.

Except for ExPlus on the ERJ 170's. Those are nice. But we all know I'm a fan of the UAL, so my opinions tend to be tilted.

personally, the most uncomfortable ride i've been in has to be the Northwest DC-10s...i know they're classics, and their days are numbered, but they were just old and uncomfortable.

the best ride has to be the United 777-200 from my experience...tons of legroom (econ plus) and nice service.

Jon, I have heard the DC-10's were very uncomfortable, especially for use across the Atlantic for NWA.

And your point about the 777-200, very excellent plane. My personal favorite too, though I like ANZ's better.

The CRJs are awful, indeed, but their interiors are outfitted more nicely in Europe than they are in the US. The fleets owned by Mesa, etc., and operated as regional or "express" (ha!) subdivisions are often rickety, smelly, and just plain run-down.

But even if it's clean, the CRJ-100/200 is the bottom of the jet barrel. A tight squeeze. And if you've ever sat over the wheels, you'll remember the sound of the landing gear bay closing. That metallic "crunch" is always a treat...
