
Roughly between only 7 and 25 percent of Americans actually own a passport, and with the new rules going into effect on January 23rd, 2007, it may become even more difficult for thousands to travel by air. Beginning January 23, including returning Americans and people from Canada and other nations in the Western Hemisphere, travelers will be required to have a valid passport. Driver licenses and birth certificates will no longer be valid forms of identification.
"Right now, there are 8,000 different state and local entities in the U.S. issuing birth certificates and driver's licenses," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said.
This can become very overwhelming making sure that an ID is not forged.
