Mesaba Settles With All Unions

It looks as if Mesaba has avoided collapse after they settled with the mechanics early Tuesday morning. The mechanics were the last group to be holding out with the airline after pilots and flight attendants tentatively agreed to a new contract. However the rank and file still need to approve the new tentative contract.

Now that Mesaba has settled their labor disputes they will be able to access the $24 million debtor-in-possession loan.

They also said that they needed the labor deals so it could compete for regional flying for Northwest, who recently purchased new planes for their CompassAir devision that looks to fly some of their regional services.

Mesaba spokeswoman Elizabeth Costello said they reached the deal with mechanics at about 2 a.m. Tuesday. Several other rounds of talks had lasted all night.

No word on whether or not the individuals will approve the tentative agreement. Other groups have rejected tentative agreements after the unions presented the proposal to them.

The terms have not be disclosed to the public at this point in time. Mesaba was looking for a 17.5 percent pay cut for the unions in order to slash labor costs.
