It looks like merger marriage is in the air. Continental released a statement on Tuesday saying that they would consider a merger to avoid being dwarfed by mega carriers in the United States.
"If the landscape of the U.S. airline industry does indeed change, we'll do what we need to do to act in the best interests of you (employees), our customers, our shareholders and the communities we serve," Chief Executive Larry Kellner said in a recorded message.
Continental has been seen as a likely merger partner for UAL Corp's., United Airlines which has been seeking a merger partner recently. The two airlines would mesh well together.
However, Continental CEO Kellner is reluctant to proceed with any merger because they do not want to be pushed to the sidelines. But with Continental reluctant to proceed with any merger, will United Airlines produce a counter offer to US Airways hostile takeover bid for Delta Air Lines? That's a real question.
