Northwest, which operates a fleet of over 100 DC-9's, has had to cancel flights after they furloughed the last group of pilots in January.
The airline said back in August that it will be recalling between 40 and 50 pilots to help fill slots at the airline as they reoraganize their route system.
The Air Line Pilots Association said that "unwise management decisions to furlough the last group in January" contributed to the shortage.
I think that it probably was a poor decision on management's part to furlough so many pilots but after cutting a large portion of their schedule there was no need to keep so many pilots around, but now that things are looking slightly better at the airline and costs are coming under control, the pilots will start being recalled. Hopefully they will recall a majority of them as the airline starts to become more healthy.
