The airline will begin new service to Brussels, Belgium and Dusseldorf, Germany, as well as the first and only nonstop service between Hartford, Conn. and Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
"Northwest's new service will conveniently connect Detroit and the Heartland of America to more of Europe's top business and leisure destinations and provide additional service from the East Coast to the Northwest/KLM European hub at Amsterdam," said Doug Steenland, Northwest president and chief executive.
The new services to Brussels and Belgium make sense for the airline. Quite a few airlines are expanding their international services but one new route makes very little sense to me. Northwest Airlines wants to do non-stop service from Hartford, Conn. to Amsterdam.
Is there a huge need for a daily service between the two cities? Will there be enough demand to fill 160 seats each day?
According to NWA there is. "The 160-seat 757 allows us to offer service in these new markets now, as well as provide our customers with more choices through additional frequencies in existing markets," said Haan.

I think there is certainly enough demand to fill this flight daily. While Hartford by itself is not that large, that portion of New England as a whole is pretty densely populated. The reach of the airport is well beyond Hartford, and I think this flight will pick up many passengers (particularly SkyTeam) who don't want to travel to Boston/New York to fly to Europe from places like Springfield, MA; Providence, RI; Bridgeport, CT; etc.
