Chicago O'Hare is home to two major hub operations and many international flights but one thing lacking is JetBlue. The airline has started the process in requesting gate access into the city. The airline says that if you look at their route map, Chicago is right in the middle of a big whole that they want to fill. However the problem lies in that Chicago's O'Hare is one of only a few airports that currently has flight caps on it between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.
JetBlue Airways has requested to have a few morning slots and one night slot, but United Airlines is arguing that after they reduced their schedule by 13 percent in recent years to accommodate the flight caps, they believe that giving out more slots to different airlines is unfair. Plus United and American both face competition at the airport from other carriers and would not be opposed to more airlines but would like to slots to be given out fairly.
'We would welcome the competition, but we're asking that the process to return those slots be fair,' said United Airlines spokeswoman Megan McCarthy.
JetBlue's letter to the FAA, dated Sept. 28, did not specify which destinations it would serve from O'Hare. Baldwin declined to comment on potential routes.
I can probably imagine at least one route would be back to their New York hub, but other routes would probably include destinations to Florida and probably some of their California destinations.
If the FAA approves the request, the airline must then negotiate a lease with the city for space at O'Hare. There may be space in Terminal 2. America West has told the city it doesn't need its gate since it merged with US Airways. This could be just right for the airline.
