The airline is saying that the A340 no longer fits their airline's model. Some experts are saying that the fleet of A340s that they have now will be phased out in place of the A380's and their new Boeing 747-800's.
The A340's, which have four engines, burn more fuel and have become pricey to operate. The new Boeing 777's and 787's, with just two engines offer similar sized passenger capacities but with much lower operating costs per passenger. Boeing has to be happy with this change in orders. With their stretched version of the 747, the success of 777's and their new 787's coming on-line in the next few years, the Boeing company is showing that it has the best line of aircraft to offer the airlines.
