Alaska Airlines to Charge for Food in Coach; Moves to Save Money
Alaska Air Group, Inc. (ALK) the parent company of Alaska Airlines wants to keep costs under control like many airlines these days.  So the airline is moving to cut 95% of their complimentary meals in coach by the end of this month.  Only 5 percent of coach flights that extend over a mealtime will continue offering free meals after Oct. 29, the airline said.

tailphoto.jpgThe airline says that it will save millions of dollars each year and will offer passengers in coach a meal for purchase if they want one.  The cost will be $5, a pretty standard price in the world of airline travel in the US.

This is a pretty standard cut back in services.  Most of the major carriers have long since eliminated coach food service.  The only remaining airline, Continental Airlines, continues to serve passengers free food.   Most of the other carriers have gone to a fee based food service.

Just the other day Alaska Airlines said they would be replacing their beverage carts with those that are much lighter to reduce the weight on their airplanes.  A process that could save them nearly half a million in fuel each year.
