Southwest and Their Pilots Start Talking
Just twelve short years ago, Southwest and their pilots approved a contract.  Little did they know that they would become some of the highest paid pilots in the nation.  After years of benefit and salary cuts at the other major carriers that saw slashes in pay of up to 40 percent, SWA pilots have been treated VERY nicely at their home.  And in return the pilots have given efforts to make Southwest one of the most profitable airlines ever.
The best paid pilots in the nation want a raise and job security, just in case SWA wants to expand their ties with other carriers.  Recently SWA and ATA have expanded their code sharing to allow SWA to open up to more international markets in Mexico with out actually flying there.

The company wants new work rules so they can improve revenues at the company.   They are facing an upcoming threat.  Their fuel hedging is running out soon and they need to find ways to keep their fuel costs down.

SouthwestAirlines22.jpg"Southwest is going to have a difficult time," said Roger King, an analyst for New York-based debt research company CreditSights Inc. "I don't know how much more efficiencies they can wring out. The pilots already are the highest-paid, which puts them in a bad bargaining position."

We will see how things turn out betwen the two groups.  There has always been a good relationship between the pilots and their management team.
