My Top Five Airlines
It seems like only the bad news is reported when it comes to airline news.  So in order to mix it up a bit, I put together my top five airlines in the US domestic market.  I considered the airlines financial health, profits, service, comfort, schedules and various other criteria to come up with the list.  Tell me what you think.  Do you agree with my list?  Disagree?

Number 5:  Midwest Airlines:  This airline, albeit small, packs quite a punch.  Their fleet of 25 Boeing 717’s features their Signature Service which is an all business class layout of 2 by 2 leather seats.  Wide leather seats, superior service, chocolate chip cookies baked onboard and competitive fares have helped Midwest Airlines earn their reputation as "The best care in the air".  My favorite part is the chocolate chip cookies, free of course.  Not only is the airline primed on customer care, but their fares are not bad either.
logo-midwest.gifA round trip fare from Kansas City (one of their hubs) to New York’s La Guardia Airport will only cost you right around $200 for a 14 day advanced purchase.  Orbitz had Delta, AirTran, and American beating them on price by $10, but factor in the 4 hours extra in flying and layovers and we have a winner.

Midwest Air Group (MEH)    "The Best Care in the Air"

Number 4:

I grappled about whether or not to put a legacy carrier on the list.  They can not seem to get things right.  No profits, poor service, aging aircraft, and labor troubles that could kill some carriers.  But one carrier actually stands out when it comes to domestic service.  It’s probably a bit of biased working in on the list too.  United Airlines has had a lot of troubles, especially after going into bankruptcy several years ago the carrier just emerged early this year.  However, while in bankruptcy they re did their airline to come out with a superior product within the legacy carrier markets.  Their economy plus sections on their aircraft make any elite traveler on an economy ticket happy.  Those extra 5 inches of legroom really do add up.  Their ExPlus planes on their regional network make regional flying okay.  The added headroom, leather seating and those “first class” perks make any shuttle flight to a hub airport worthy of them over any other airline.  Prices are comparable to most other airlines.  Service has been excellent on my flights, of course yours may vary, I tend to see the same crews over and over again.

UAL Corp. (UAUA)  "It's Time to Fly"

Number 3:  Southwest Airlines:  I have to say up front, I am not a fan of the airline.  I don’t like the show up 3 hours before your flight, grab a boarding number, wait for your cattle call, push and shove to the front of the line to get on the plane first, pick your seat, hopefully not between two people, and listen to chatty Cathy flight attendants singing songs kind of airline.  BUT, they know how to run an airline.  Among the top carriers in the they consistently have the lowest complaint rates.  They make huge profits.  They pay their employees WELL.  (Their pilots are some of the highest paid in the industry).  And they move a lot of people efficiently.  Their anti-hub and spoke system seems to be one of the best in the world.  Well paid staff that are worry free of if they will have a job next week tend to promote better, friendlier service.  And the driving factor that put SWA at number 3:  PRICE.  They may not be the cheapest all the time, but a majority of the time SWA has a very competitive price.

Southwest Airlines (LUV)  *DING*  "You are not free to move about the country"  & "Symbol of Freedom"

Number 2:
Alaskan Airlines and Horizon Airlines:  This partnership between the two airlines makes them the number 2 on my list.  Extra perks like free drinks on horizon flights will make you fall in love with the airline.  The other thing that will make some happy, they actually turn profits!  They turned profits even while our major carriers were battling through bankruptcies.  The carriers have major operations on the west coast and Alaska as their name implies, but you can find them in the big cities on the east coast too.  But if you are flying out of Seattle, Portland or any Alaskan city, your best airline is Alaska Airlines.  High service levels have made this airline a favorite among travelers too.

Alaskan Airlines
(ALK)

And the Number 1 Airline:

Frontier Airlines!  This regional carrier has most of their focus west of the Mississippi River but makes up for it in service, class, price, and those extra perks.  The carrier which is has a hub in Denver flies an all Airbus modern fleet of aircraft.  Their fleet, on average only 2 years old, has more legroom, wider seats and direcTV service featuring 24 live TV channels.  No Saturday night stay-overs, free standby on same day of flight, and other perks make this airline an industry leader.  Prices are competitive with other airlines too.  Frontier has faced continued competition from United and their LCC, Ted, and with the recent entry of SWA into the Denver market, Frontier has faced more pressure.  However, the airline is pulling through and seeing no sign of stopping.  They have foregone the expansion to the east in search for leisure markets such as and recently with Calgary becoming a Frontier city.

Their advertising is key to their success.  They have built a strong relationship with their passengers in Denver.  Each airplane has a distinct animal or set of animals on their tail; each one having a different personality.  So when you do fly Frontier, and I recommend it above any other airline, you can say I’m flying with Trixie, Foxy, Flip, or with Larry.

Whoa there, Rob. Didn't do your homework on this one.

Alaska flies to lots more places than the west coast and Alaska. You'll also see them in: Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Newark, Boston, Miami, Orlando, Washington DC, Canada and Mexico.

I think you got it right. Frontier is one of the best airlines in the country. FYI, this is a terrific airline blog. Thanks for creating it!

Frontier is # 1, but lets keep it between us and a few of our best friends.

Even though I fly UA a lot, every chance I get to hop on Frontier, I'm there. And I'll try to keep it to the cool people Thomas.

As one of those HAPPY employee's at SWA, I have to say not all of us are a
"chatty Cathy". Not all of sing but we all still manage to keep our passanger's happy as you mentioned and still make a profit doing it. Been doing it for a looooong time to. We must be doing something right!

Exactly why SWA made the list. The company that you work for does things right. They do their research on cities before going into them. They have an effective efficent business model and in the airline industry that is a rarity.

BTW, Never had a bad experience on SWA.

I've traveled on United Airlines most often because of frequent transcontinental trips.

Frontier was very good the one time I flew to Los Angeles, via their hub in Denver.

The airline I absolutely love is Jet Blue. I add Florida cities to my itinerary more and more just to experience the comfort and care. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they stay in the black and expand their routes.

I've never been on JetBlue but hope to one day. Their route structure just doesn't mix with my destinations. Maybe one day they will expand more into the midwest so I can get a chance.

SWA does not use boarding numbers, it's been years since they did. Maybe that is why I feel that your opinion of SWA is wrong, poor research. SWA uses boarding LETTERS (A,B,C) and anyone can easily print your A pass out at home 24 hours in advance, therefore not having to be at the airport 3 hours early. Our family of 4 booked a flight 5 days prior and I got our "A" boarding passes online and we all sat together. Try that at some other airlines.

It has been years since I have flown SWA. So yes my information regarding the boarding process is quite outdated. Unfortuntely they don't fly into the market I currently live in, so it will be a while before I get to fly them again.

Again, they made my top 5 airlines. Even if I have a few bad things to say about them, I still believe that they are among the top airlines in the US. They make money, treat their employees right, and most all are a safe, realiable, and speedy airline.
