Could the US airline market see another liquidation in just weeks? Mesaba Airline's management warned last week that if they can not do something within in the next few weeks they will be forced to start the process. All this comes as a US judge ruled that Mesaba can NOT force pay cuts on the unions. Right now Mesaba is bleeding a million dollars a week from the airline. It may not seem like a lot but the airline is just a small feeder for Northwest Airlines.
Tom Wychor, chairman of the Mesaba Pilots's Union said, "The employees are looking at the choice of personal liquidation or corporate liquidation. This pilot group will not ratify a substandard agreement that will undercut their futures in the industry, whether at Mesaba or somewhere else."
The groups met once last week, but this was the first meeting for them in months. The pilots and flight attendants met on last Friday and the mechanics met on Monday of this week. Though it looks as if some serious negotiations are still needed. No talks have been held with the pilots union in about six weeks, and Wychor said his group is waiting for a better offer from the company before resuming talks. The last negotiations with the flight attendants were held in June, and the airline last bargained with the mechanics in mid-July.
