The 2,900 former flight attendants will begin picketing their own union to show displays of anger towards them for not trying hard enough to get their jobs back. The ex-TWA employees say they want to stay in the hiring line, hoping that the conditions in the industry will continue to improve enough so they can regain their jobs.
American has declined to extend the rehiring deadline of five years except as part of negotiations for a new contract in 2008.
The fight goes back to early 2001, when AMR bought TWA out of bankruptcy. The American Airlines flight attendants' union put TWA veterans at the bottom of their seniority list, meaning they were the first to be laid off.
A class-action lawsuit over stripping seniority from the TWA employees is pending in federal court in New York.
It really is sad that people who want to work for a company are not going to be allowed to remain in line for the hiring process. Some of these people that were laid off five years ago were high on the seniority list when the two airlines merged together.
St. Louis Post Dispatch (STLtoday)
