The airline said it recorded revenue of $1.60 billion in the month of August. It said it spent $431 million on aircraft fuel, part of $1.54 billion in total operating expenses in the month. As of the end of the month, Delta said it had $3 billion of unrestricted cash. All together the airline has lost more than $16 billion since January 2001.
So what does this mean? Well it means that the labor cuts are helping the airline. The reorganization of the company and the implementation of new routes has helped bring in new revenue for the airline. Delta needs to continue focusing on new routes that will bring in revenue. They need to continue to improve on products and services, and they need to continue to improve their level of customer satisfaction, especially in business class where the real revenue is at. But the real trick in doing all that is to keep costs down at the same time. Ed Bastian, Delta Air Line's Chief Financial Officer said, "During the month of August, Delta continued to make progress as evidenced by our revenue and cost performance. While we have more work ahead of us to achieve sustained profitability, we are encouraged by our results to date and are on track with our restructuring plan."
