The carrier will offer vegetarian and meat options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Northwest's executive chefs began a rotation of 16 lunch options last week, and they will introduce 16 dinner options in August.
"People have obviously asked for choice," said Suzanne Boda, vice president of in-flight services. Northwest is making the meal upgrades "to invest in our most loyal customers," Boda said.
The airline will continue selling meals to coach passengers.
Northwest reduced its food choices in first class in May 2005 and the airline has been cutting costs in bankruptcy.
Dan Mord, Northwest's director of food-service product design, said the airline's most frequent fliers wanted more than a restoration of the old food choices.
"We've heard loud and clear that a lot of our passengers prefer a healthy, vegetarian-type option," Mord said.
