United, a unit of UAL Corp., said on a recorded employee hot line that some jobs could be affected but it is premature to evaluate the impact on staffing levels.
The decision was based on an insufficient on-time delivery performance during the Postal Service's evaluation period from last October through March, the carrier said Friday.
United said it declined the agency's offer to extend its contract three months from the June 30 expiration date, choosing to focus on other areas. It will continue to carry international mail, which comprises the majority of its mail service.Scott Dolan, United's senior vice president for airport operations and cargo, told employees that the decision highlights the need to deliver on customer service promises.
"Although the service expectations of all of our customers are increasing, we need to adapt and always maintain the very high level of service and reliability our customers expect of us," he said.
