Jenny Dervin, a JetBlue spokeswoman, said that the airline applied for the Kennedy Airport-Cancun route in early December, after the U.S. and Mexico agreed to expand service between the two destinations. Previously, only American Airlines and Continental flew from the New York Metro area to Cancun.
JetBlue has in recent times been struggling for profitability as it and most other airlines in the industry fight soaring fuel prices and intense competition. JetBlue recently announced that it will begin service to Aruba in September.
The airline has not yet announced when service to Cancun will begin, or what fares might be. Dervin said, however, service is likely to begin in September. The entrance of JetBlue to that market is certain to spark competition. JetBlue has been a leader in the low-cost category.
'This is a huge opportunity for JetBlue,' Dervin said. 'It's a very big market for New Yorkers.'
