American Airlines Flt. 1740 Lands Safely After Landing Gear Problem
A Chicago Department of Aviation spokesperson said the landing gear problems were "not completely unusual".  What?  How often does this sort of landing gear problem occur?  Is it worth looking into fixing the issue instead of just saying it's not unusual?

Pilots on an American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Chicago used emergency procedures to land a plane after its nose gear, which includes the front wheel, failed to lower and lock, the carrier said today.


The No. 1 U.S. airline, a unit of AMR Corp., said flight 1740 landed safety at Chicago O'Hare International Airport and there were no injuries.

he carrier said 131 passengers and five crew members were aboard the MD-80 aircraft.

An AMR spokeswoman said the pilots landed the plane using the rear wheels first, touching the front of the plane to the runway afterward. A typical landing requires the use of both front and rear landing gear.

Chicago Department of Aviation spokeswoman Kristen Cabanban confirmed AMR's account of the landing and said the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were investigating the incident.

She said problems with landing gear were "not completely unusual," although she said she did not how frequently such problems necessitated emergency landing procedures

What? Are you blind? Haven't you seen all the incidents even just recently? Tire problems, landing gear problems, hydraulic problems... They are mechanical devices and things happen. Do you think everyone just sits back and says oh well...? "Aviation Spokesperson" is just that... not much knowledge, but a media mouthpiece

I understand that mechanical devices have issues and sometimes do not work properly all the time. I was referring to the MD-80 more specifically, how often does it happen to this aircraft?

AA has so many of the worst planes in the air .. The MD80 death machine, the awwwful 757 with the worst fresh air rate in the sky, the very aged A300's.. it's been downhill since Crandall got his mitts on them and I see no light at the end of the tunnel.

I don't know if you read about this, but AA was thinking of just replacing the engines on the MD-80s to save money instead of investing in newer aircraft.

But investing in new aircraft is hard for all of the carriers except a few in the US because of their problems with money. Takes money to buy new planes. AA just doesnt have any to spare.
