US Airways has slashed its fares to New York City, following the announcement this month that low-fare carrier JetBlue Airways will start serving New York from Charlotte in July.
The New York area is the most popular destination from Charlotte.
On Monday morning, US Airways' Web site was listing its lowest nonstop, round-trip fare to New York's LaGuardia International Airport at $227.10, including taxes and fees, for travel beginning July 12, the same day that JetBlue starts service to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. Before Monday, US Airways listed the fare at nearly $400.
US Airways' nonstop flights to Newark, N.J., were offered Monday at $207.10, including taxes and fees. US Airways does not fly to JFK from Charlotte.
JetBlue's lowest round-trip fare to JFK was $157.10, including taxes and fees. None of the fares requires a Saturday-night stay.
Many travelers headed to Manhattan consider flying into LaGuardia more convenient than flying into JFK. In addition to US Airways and JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, Continental Airlines and American Airlines fly nonstop to New York-area airports.
