After years of cutting back its workforce, United Airlines said Thursday it plans to hire 4,000 employees this year, including about 200 in Denver.
United is hiring up to 10 airport operations supervisors, 50 part-time ramp workers and about 100 seasonal employees [in Denver]. It also is calling about 30 customer service employees back to work from furlough.
The 4,000 include 2,000 flight attendant positions previously announced. Those positions are in Chicago and Washington.
The company has received 50,000 applications for 2,000 jobs, United's managing director of human resources Randy Rotondo said Thursday.
United had about 83,000 employees in late 2002. After more than three years in Chapter 11 bankruptcy - from which it emerged Feb. 1 - it has 57,000.
Rotondo said United is going to "first-tier schools, such as the University of Chicago, Northwestern, Columbia School of Business and University of Southern California, to hire top business school graduates."
"We're offering these candidates exposure to commercial, operations and financial department positions in hopes of retaining them as future leaders of the business. The next phase in this program is to expand it to international schools with similar reputations."
