Sometimes Traveling Via "Full Fare" Is Better
I have recently returned from a nice extended weekend in San Francisco with a few friends.  We were suppose to be on an afternoon flight direct from San Francisco to Chicago where we would catch our connection to our final destination.  However, we wanted to get home earlier.  We showed up at the airport at 6am checked into our afternoon flight.  We asked the lady at the check in kiosks where we could go to change our flight times from later in the day to earlier in the day.  She started to say she didn't know if we could do that until we both said one key 5 word phrase.

WE ARE FULL FARE ECONOMY.

checkin.jpgAfter that was said, the help began to pour out.  She directed us to just head to gate 34 to try and get on the flight that was leaving in 20 minutes.

Once those words were spoken, it was as if the possiblities were endless.  Several key strokes later we were confirmed all the way through to our final destination, with exit row seats the entire way.

Some helpful tips:

1.  If you are at all worried that you might have to change your travel plans, always book full fare.  The airlines are more willing to work with you if you are paying the full price of the ticket.  E-tickets and internet specials are nice to get cheap, but full fare works out better if plans change and your ticket needs to be changed.

2.  Be polite to the people working behind the counter!  I can not stress this enough.  Even if they are having a bad day, saying please, thank-you, and other polite comments along those lines goes a long way.  Even go the distance of writing a comment to the airline thanking the person for their ability to work with you in the situation.

3.  Be flexible if you are standing by or changing your flight times.  The more flexible, if possible, the better your situation will turn out.

Finally, Full Fares in economy on some airlines will allow you to earn even more miles or in United's case, elite qualifying segments and miles.  Up to 150% of the total can be credited to your frequent flier account.  Thus getting you just one more step closer to that premier or gold status.
